Passed by a fellow RX-8 driver on the way to work this morning. He gave me a thumbs up as he went by. I honked back. Happens all the time. It’s the kind of camaraderie that comes from driving something a little bit different. Something not really rare or exotic, but that you don’t see every day, and when you do, you know the drive “gets it”.

Do you ever get “nods” from non-rotary Mazdas? I want to give a wave from my Miata or 323 GTX but I think most RX-8 drivers around these parts aren't necessarily enthusiasts.

I do not. I think that’s because Mazdas are otherwise ubiquitous. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. I think it’s always nice to express your appreciation of a cool car to its owner.

Too true! This morning I actually saw my first Fiat 124 Spider out on the road while I was driving my Miata. By the time I recognized what it was, it had already passed by in oncoming traffic. But it made me wonder how Fiat-Mazda owner relations will go. Will Fiat owners know they are essentially driving a Miata? I would hope so, but I suppose we shall see!

Oh, I saw that those were coming in to dealers now! I was excited to check one out in that gorgeous blue because Mazda isn’t making any with a color except red. Then I read that the 124s in blue are only a special limited launch edition color, and the only color available from dealers is red, too (I don’t consider white, black, or gray to be colors). Rats!

The majority of the new Miatas I have seen are a steel/sky blue mix.

That’s called Blue Reflex Mica, and it’s not a real color. It’s the sky on a rainy day.
